About to come down the aisle, from Chicago, Illinois, Barack Hussein Obama.
Not a bad start… calling for bipartisanship through a story of times worse than today immediately after reminding us that most of this mess was inherited.
“Stubborn resilience” is a great soundbyte.
False start by Joe Biden. Veep is paying attention as any good yes man. Pelosi looks board.
“[Bank bailout] It is as about as popular as a root canal.”
Mr. Obama hates the bank bailout, but supported it… claims it as a success. Hmmmm… flip flop.
Uses this a talking point to attack the banks (the same ones that stabilized the economy…?)
Claims to have cut taxes for a laundry list of taxes, then seems confused why the Pub’s aren’t cheering. Tax cuts on transfer payments while increasing spending could be why. True conservatives are for fiscal responsibility.
Nice joke about expecting cheering from the Rs. Dems get rowdy and Pelosi smiles.
Claims that the recovery saved jobs and “avarted disaster”.
Calling for new jobs bill: Jobs #1 focus for 2010.
Standing Ovation.
$30,000,000,000 from repaid TARP funds to small community banks for local/small businesses.
Eliminate capital gains tax for small businesses. Standing Ovation.
Talking infrastructure now…
High speed trains in Tampa part of the old act…. Where does the Tampa rail go?
Calling for energy efficiency sounds great (especially w/o the global warming argument.)
Calling for new businesses and a new economic foundation… wanting to solve problems that face families.
Calls the 2000s the “lost decade”.
Nice reaction from Democratic House members to pressure Senators on the jobs bill.
Calling for action to solve major issues sounds nice.
Awesome soundbyte: “I do not accept second place for the United States of America.”
But what is the substance?
Solutions to our problems:
- Overhaul Financial Market
** Don’t attack banks. Really? I thought that Mr. Obama hated helping them thirty minutes ago…
** Higher regulation; pressure on Senate from the House. Claiming that lobbyists are causing problem
** What kinds of regulation?
** Threatening to veto bad bills gets a reaction
- Encourage Innovation
** New, safe powerplants (Standing ovation for that? Really?
** Republicans cheer expansion of oil, not Dems.
** Clean fuels, biofuels gets a positive.
** Calling for comprehensive energy bill/re: Global Warming
** Notes that House passed energy bill, again harps on Senate.
** Republicans rabble at “overwhelming scientific evidence” for global warming — almost got the message right. It is the right thing to do is plenty fine! Don’t add the global warming rhetoric.
-Encourage Exports
** New goal: Double our exports in the next five years.
** National Export Initiative:
— Help the farmers
— Expand our free trade initiatives (which killed our exports, hmmmm) Rs cheer.
-Invest in Education
** The best anti-poverty campaign around is a world class education.” Very true.
** Encourages Senate (again) to pass a House bill — now it is on educational reform.
** Wants to spend more money on education… sounds good.
** Wants to forgive educational loans after a while. Calls for higher ed to lower costs.
Transition to health insurance reform from the Middle Class.
Delayed standing ovation from the Republicans.
“Let’s clear a few things up.”
It will be interesting to see if Mr. Obama can reclaim the control over the healthcare debate.
Hey! Michelle Obama finally found her issue: childhood obesity! It only took a year…
Obama takes part of the blame for the healthcare disaster.
Millions will lose healthcare this year? The rhetoric is beginning to sound like Mr. Bush pre-Iraq.
Offers a chance for bipartisanship.
Asks Congress not to walk away from healthcare reform… “Don’t walk away…. Let’s get it done.”
Blames the deficit on:
-Prescription Drug Program
-Two Wars
-Two Tax Cuts
“All before I walked in the door.”
Again, it’s Mr. Bush’s fault.
Admits to adding $1,000,000,000,000 to the debt due to the financial crisis.
Offers to freeze spending after 2011 (besides military, healthcare, social security)…
Vows to veto any bill that breaks this cause.
One has to wonder if Mr. Obama will actually come through on this pledge.
Mr. Obama supports a bipartisan commission to bring down costs.
The Senate voted down such a bill yesterday, (again, being harsh on the Senate) so Mr. Obama will provide an executive order to do so.
Note how the deadline is after reelection.
Mr. Obama claims that the conservative playbook will fail the economy. Yet when one notes the problems with the budget, they were
– drugs
– wars
– tax cuts
Two large expenditures and tax cuts. Hmmm, does not sound like the standard conservative playbook — just the Bush-brand Republican playbook.
Beating up on the United States Supreme Court while they are in the front row: Give ‘em Hell, Mr. Obama!
Why is Mme Pelosi passing notes?
Mr. Obama calls for (now illegal) campaign finance reform and earmark reform.
Obama calling for a change to the political game in Washington. Acknowledged the loss in Massachusetts passively in a reference to election season.
“I’m not interested in re litigating the past.”
But it’s Mr. Bush’s fault, yes?
Meanwhile, Mr. Obama calls for bipartisanship on behalf of national security. It is interesting how Mr. Obama provided a criticism against a “just say no” straw elephant.
Notes the near attack on Christmas, but flaunts a series of positives on the war on terror, immediately before plugging that the troops will come home.
Call for support for the veterans at home, and plugs the first two ladies.
Plugs the anti-nuclear weapons treaty negotiations with Russia (which are falling through, it sounds.)
Calls for more strict sanctions against rogue nuclear countries.
Calls out North Korea and Iran, and promises more “consequences.” Why does the President sound like a distressed single mom ad Wal Mart?
Sounds like Mr. Obama is heading towards the close with a pro-human rights speech. Civil rights not just here, but abroad.
Look at the glares coming from the brass after the Don’t Ask Don’t Tell remarks. It appears to be a tough sell for the military leaders.
A call for immigration reform without detail, once again.
Here comes the finish!
Replug the catchphrase “change you can believe in”.
Time to hit the reset button with the new decade.
Went with a slow build up for the finish, but it did not seem to hit at full speed. Well written rhetoric, however.
Now it is time for the Republican Response hailing from the House of Delegates in Virginia.
Governor Robert McDonnell
Playing the Thomas Jefferson card repeatedly sounds nice for a hometown (home-building) speech.
“We want results, not rhetoric…” Amen.
Props to McDonnell for hitting the Democrats on several healthcare talking points. solutions.GOP.gov plugged, nice.
Pro-innovative energy on the basis of economic prudence will win the day over the global warming panicked.
Pro-education speak– even showing common ground with the President– is bread and butter for the Republicans in a post NCLB world.
pro-Afghanistan policy teamed with anti-terror policy and a reference to Senator-elect Brown (R-MA) is a unique hit on the administration.
Government closest to the people governs best.
No wonder McDonnell is a star in Virginia. Classical conservatism.
If the Republicans can control the message this November, then they will win big… perhaps bigger than under former Speaker Gingrich.
